Barry B. Longyear
Barry Brookes Longyear (born May 12, 1942 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania ) is an American science fiction writer. He is best known for the story Enemy Mine, which was also filmed . He also published under the pseudonyms Mark Ringdahl and Frederik Longbeard.
Life
Longyear studied at Wayne State University in Detroit from 1966 to 1967 . In 1967 he married Regina Bedsun. After graduating, he worked until 1968 as a production manager at the Madison Corporation in Detroit, a manufacturer of microfilms . The couple then moved to Philadelphia , where Longyear ran a print shop and published Sol III magazine. In 1972 they bought a 120 year old farmhouse in Farmington , Maine , and Longyear reopened a print shop. The end of 1977 his first novel was published The Tryouts (German sample presentation ) in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine , since Longyear is a freelance writer. Longyear also wrote the book for the film with David Gerrold .
Longyear became known with the novel Enemy Mine (German: Du, mein Feind ) published in 1979 , which won three of the most important science fiction awards. Longyear also received the John W. Campbell Best New Writer Award for best new author of the year. The story describes the forced coexistence of two soldiers of warring races, which ultimately leads to friendship and a sense of responsibility towards the other. The story was filmed in 1985 by Wolfgang Petersen as Enemy Mine - Beloved Enemy . Three other narratives appeared later that continued the plot.
In 1980 Longyear suffered a breakdown and had to seek treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. These experiences form the basis of his 1988 novel Saint Mary Blue .
Longyear's novels and stories are characterized by their own dramaturgy , the sensitive portrayal of his protagonists and his humanistic ideas, paired with empathy and compassion .
