Laboratorija fantastiki (“Labor der Fantastik”, Russian Лаборатория фантастики ), FantLab for short , is a non-commercial Russian-language database that was founded in July 2004. The database collects information on science fiction and fantasy writers, literary works and magazines from around the world. In April 2014 there were entries for over 3,200 authors and entries for over 418,000 works. FantLab, along with the Internet Speculative Fiction Database and the online edition of the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction , both of which focus on English literature, is one of the most extensive relevant offers on the Internet.
content
With the aim of completeness and reliability, data is collected on fantastic literature. The FantLab contains bibliographic data not only from science fiction and fantasy authors, but also from writers who use the fantastic only occasionally or in individual works. The work is not commercial, everything is done by enthusiasts. The original texts cannot be downloaded or read. But there are few exceptions: some authors have given permission to offer their texts for download free of charge (for example, stories by the founder of FantLab, Alexey Lvov). Entries for some titles contain a reference to translations into other languages (for example, the translation of Wladimir Korolenko's Makar's Dream from Russian into English by Marian Fell (Makar's Dream)).
recommendations
The FantLab's recommendations work on the basis of social networks, similar to Last.fm. Any registered user can rate books and write reviews. Based on these evaluations, “like-minded people” and “antipodes” are identified among other users. Like-minded people are users who have a similar taste in literature, while the antipodes are users whose ratings differ widely.
Genre classification
Advanced FantLab users have access to the genre classification. Users can add tags to any work from seven areas:
- Genre: science fiction, fantasy, horror , fable , etc.
- General characteristics: adventurous, philosophical, psychological, etc.
- Place of the event: the earth , other planets , parallel universe , etc.
- Time of the event: from the Stone Age to the distant future.
- Themes and motifs: vampires , alien invasion, artificial intelligence, etc.
- Narrative action: linear, parallel, with branches, etc.
- Recommended age: for children and teenagers, for adults, for all age groups.
The most common tags are shown on the page of the work.
Leaderboards
The ranking lists of authors and works are created on the basis of user ratings. Only the ratings of users who have achieved a certain rank are taken into account - this prevents users from uncertainly changing the average rating of a work and thus influencing the rankings.
Columns
A FantLab column is a mixture of a blog and a selection of articles. Each user can write their own column. Many well-known writers (for example Vadim Panov), critics and journalists have a FantLab column.
Awards
- In 2009 the FantLab was awarded the “Strannik” prize in the “Best Website” category.
- In 2010 FantLab received the Internet Roscon Prize for the best Russian-language Internet portal about Fantastik.
