An initial exploration of the area in which Farmington is located was made in 1776 by Stephen Titcomb, Robert Grover, James Henry, Robert Alexander and James MacDonald, all of Topsham, Maine. They marked out the later settlement areas. The land belonged to William Tyng and others. Tyng had been awarded it for his services to the state in 1703. It was called Tyngtour or Plantation Number One and Sandy River Plantation . The settlement grew from the very beginning and received its charter in 1794. The first post office opened in 1797. Since its early days, Farmington has been home to higher education institutions such as the Willows, a seminary for young women founded by Hiram Belcher .
Today Farmington is the location of the University of Maine at Farmington .
The high fertility of the soils in Farmington was the basis for particularly effective agriculture. In addition to grain, the wool industry developed particularly well. It made Farmington one of the largest wool producing towns in New England. Small industry, such as the construction of carriages, baskets and other goods, also settled here.
The Sandy River Railroad reached Farmington in 1879. The Farmington – Marbles railway was closed in 1933 and is now only used in sections as a museum railway.
