Chester Greenwood

Chester Greenwood (* 1858 in Farmington , Maine ; † 1937 ) was an American inventor. He invented the earmuffs .

He was one of six children, lived on a farm and had dropped out of school. His ears froze while ice skating on Abbot Pond and the scarf wrapped around his head kept falling off. At home he straightened a few clincher hoops and asked his grandmother to sew fur on them. On March 13, 1877, he received a patent on his Greenwood Champion Ear Protector and made a fortune with it and over 130 other patents.

In Maine , December 21st is Chester Greenwood Day .
