Other names were Jerusalem Township , Sugarloaf Township , Carrabassett Plantation and Crockertown . On October 26, 1971, the area was organized as a town under the name Carrabassett Valley .

The town is characterized by the Sugarloaf ski area on Sugarloaf Mountain. The economic success of the largest ski area in Maine led to a significant increase in the population. The private Carrabassett Valley Academy is a ski and snowboard academy that offers most of the downhill winter mountain sports. The school was founded in 1982.

Sports

Thanks to the Sugarloaf ski area, Carrabassett Valley is a distinct winter sports resort. In February 1971 the ski area hosted world cup races for men and women, and in 1984 it was the venue for the Alpine Junior World Championship .
