history

The area was given to Captain Tyng and his men as a grant in recognition of their service in fighting Indians. It was researched by Solomon Adams and others in 1785 and measured by Samuel Titcomb. It was parceled out in 1787. Initially named Harrytown in memory of a dangerous Indian who fell in the fight. The first settlers named it Tyngtown in memory of the Grant. A first mill was built in 1790 by Samuel Butterfield.

On June 22, 1803, the area previously organized as Tyngtown Plantation was organized as a town. The name Wilton came from the hometown of Abraham Butterfield in New Hampshire, who had paid the fees for the administrative act.

The US Highway 2 leads from west to east through the town and connects Wilton in the north with Bangor and the Canadian border and in the south with Vermont. The Maine State Route 156 leads north to south through the area of the Town. It runs along the east bank of Wilson Lake .

There is no health center in Wilton. Closest health centers and hospitals are in Farmington, Canton and Dixfield.

Wilton has its own library. The Wilton Public Library was founded in 1901 and is located on Goodspeed Street, in the Grade I listed building Goodspeed Memorial Library .
