Atilla Karaosmanoğlu (* 1931 or 1932 in Manisa ; † November 11, 2013 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish economist and politician. He was Vice President of the World Bank and in 1971 Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey.

Life

Karaosmanoğlu was born in Manisa in 1931 or 1932. He studied at Ankara Üniversitesi until 1954 and then did his doctorate in economics at Istanbul Üniversitesi . In the United States he then taught as a lecturer at New York University and Harvard University . After returning to Turkey, Karaosmanoğlu worked at the State Planning Office and became an advisor to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

From 1966 Karaosmanoğlu worked for the World Bank . On March 26, 1971, then Prime Minister Nihat Erim appointed him Deputy Prime Minister (responsible for economics) in his cabinet, which had been installed by the military after the military coup in Turkey in 1971 . On December 3, 1971, Karaosmanoğlu and 10 ministers resigned because the ministers saw themselves unable to implement the promised reforms. According to Turkish journalist Metin Toker , Karaosmanoğlu is said to have blamed differences of opinion between his ministry and the finance ministry for the disagreement in the cabinet.

Karaosmanoğlu returned to the World Bank, where he worked for the next 22 years. He was the vice president of the bank. He retired on November 30, 1994.

Karaosmanoğlu died on November 11, 2013 and was buried in Çengelköy Cemetery in Istanbul. A memorial fund was set up in his name by the Turkish Philanthropy Fund to support the organization Çağdaş Yaşamı Destekleme Derneği .
