Wilton is a town in Franklin County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 4116 inhabitants in 1708 households on an area of 110.9 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Wilton has a total area of 110.9 km², of which 106.86 km² is land and 4.04 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Wilton is located in southwest Franklin County on the border with Oxford County . Centrally in the area of the town is Wilson Lake , in the southeast of Pease Pond and in the north of Varnum Pond . The surface of the area is very hilly. The 524 m high Varnum Mountain is the highest point in the area of the town.

history
The area was given to Captain Tyng and his men as a grant in recognition of their service in fighting Indians. It was researched by Solomon Adams and others in 1785 and measured by Samuel Titcomb. It was parceled out in 1787. Initially named Harrytown in memory of a dangerous Indian who fell in the fight. The first settlers named it Tyngtown in memory of the Grant. A first mill was built in 1790 by Samuel Butterfield.
On June 22, 1803, the area previously organized as Tyngtown Plantation was organized as a town. The name Wilton came from the hometown of Abraham Butterfield in New Hampshire, who had paid the fees for the administrative act.

Economy and Infrastructure

The US Highway 2 leads from west to east through the town and connects Wilton in the north with Bangor and the Canadian border and in the south with Vermont. The Maine State Route 156 leads north to south through the area of the Town. It runs along the east bank of Wilson Lake .
Public facilities
There is no health center in Wilton. Closest health centers and hospitals are in Farmington, Canton and Dixfield.
Wilton has its own library. The Wilton Public Library was founded in 1901 and is located on Goodspeed Street, in the Grade I listed building Goodspeed Memorial Library .

Wilton, along with Chesterville, Farmington, Industry, New Sharon, New Vineyard, Starks, Temple, Vienna and Weld, is part of Maine School Administrative District 9 , the Mt. Blue Regional School District .
