history

The grant for the area was given by the State of Massachusetts in 1794 to Jacob Abbott. The area was settled from 1790. The first settler in the area was former sea captain Perkins Allen from Martha's Vineyard. Until the incorporation as Town in 1812, the name was Curvo Plantation. Allen had given the area its name because it reminded him of a port of the same name.

By 1805 there were 21 families settling on both sides of the Sandy River. Their livelihood was agriculture. When 50 families were living in the area in 1811, a petition was sent to the Massachusetts court asking it to become a separate town. This request was granted and the name of the town was Phillips after William Phillips, a co-owner of the Jakob Abbot grant. The first meeting of the new town took place on March 14, 1812.

Smaller industries settled here, such as flour mills, sawmills, a shingle factory and a wool mill that processed the fleece of the sheep into wool . The railroad reached Phillips in 1879 on the Sandy River Railroad , a narrow-gauge railway. In 1908 she went to the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad . All operations were discontinued in 1932. A small part of the route is used as a museum train from Phillips.
