The grant for an area of 31,000 acres (12,545 hectares ) was awarded in 1796 to James Rangeley and three other investors by the state of Massachusetts . The land stretched between the Kennebec River and New Hampshire and included the logging and mining rights. The area was settled from 1817. After his father's death, James Rangeley, Jr. inherited his stake in Maine land and eventually bought the other partners' land. In 1825, Rangeley and his family traveled to the area via the only horse-drawn route from Madrid to settle there. He built a two-story mansion in a beautiful location and lived in it with his family. Rangeley lived by the lake for fifteen years and lived a life practiced by the English nobility. When his daughter died, he sold his property and moved with his wife to Portland, where they lived for several years. Rangeley was organized as a town in 1855 and named after James Rangeley.

In 1891 the Phillips and Rangeley Railroad reached Rangeley. In 1908 she went to the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad ; In 1932 the line was closed.

In addition to agriculture and fishing in the adjacent lakes, the population has long lived from tourism.
