Avon is a town in Franklin County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 461 inhabitants in 341 households on an area of 107.87 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Avon has a total area of 107.87 km², of which 107.2 km² is land and 0.67 km² is made up of water .
Geographical location
Avon is centrally located in the south of Franklin County. The Sandy River , a tributary of the Kennebec River, flows through the north of the town. There are several larger lakes in the town's area, the largest being Mount Blue Pond in the west of the town, and a smaller lake being the Day Mountain Pond in the east of the town. In the south lies the Mt. Blue State Park , in it lies the highest point of the town, the 972 m high Mount Blue . The surface of the town is hilly.

history
Originally the area was called Township No. 2 designated. Other names were Abbott's Purchase or Upper Town. Settlement began in 1781. The first settlers were two sea captains, Joshua Soule and Perkins Allen. The residents started a petition in 1801 to make the area a town. They suggested the name Bilboa or Canterbury . When the area was incorporated on February 22, 1802, the state government named it Avon after the River Avon in England . From there came one of the ancestors of Captain Soule, George Soule, who emigrated to America on the Mayflower .
In 1853 Avon gave land to the nearby Town Strong.
Avon has always been a small community with only a few sawmills until 1875. The school children went to neighboring high schools and there was no post office. In 1879 the Sandy River Railroad reached Avon in 1879. In 1908 she became part of the Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad . This was discontinued in 1935.

Culture and sights
Parks
The Mount Blue State Park lies with its eastern part in the area of the Town Avon. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the federal government bought 51 parcels of land and hired workers to build roads and buildings. The land was sold to the state of Maine by the US Department of Agriculture in 1955. Today the park covers an area of 8,000 acres (3,237.5 hectares ).

Parallel to the Sandy River , Maine State Route 4 runs south of the river to the north and Maine State Route 149 runs north of the river through northern Avon.
The Farmington – Marbles railway has one stop through the town.
Public facilities
There are no medical facilities in Avon. The closest are at Farmington.
Avon does not have its own library, the closest one is in Phillips.

Avon is part of Regional School Union 58 / Maine School Administrative District 58 along with Kingfield, Phillips and Strong .
