Joachim von Kneitlingen (* around 1500 ; † April 24, 1552 in Leipzig ) was a rector of the University of Leipzig and canon of the collegiate colleges of Magdeburg , Halberstadt and Merseburg .

Life

Von Kneitlingen's name appears for the first time in 1533 in the registers of the University of Leipzig, where he studied law and later worked as a legal scholar ( Doctor iuris utriusque ) and professor of Latin. In this capacity he took over the office of Rector in the winter semester of 1545 and 1549 . At the same time he became a member of the colleges of Magdeburg, Halberstadt, Meißen and Merseburg. From 1545 he was also in the service of Elector Moritz von Sachsen , for whom he led negotiations with Georg von Anhalt . Joachim von Kneitlingen died unexpectedly on May 24, 1552 and was buried one day later in the university church .

The epitaph consists of a total of seven parts, which are made of bronze . It is divided into a large inscription panel, two panels with family coats of arms, which are arranged above and below. All three panels are framed on the sides by a column architecture that is richly decorated with plant ornaments. The family coat of arms can be assumed to be an ancestral sample . The coat of arms of the von Kneitlingen family is secured at the top left. Then the coat of arms on the top left should be that of the mother and the two lower coats of arms that of the grandmothers on the paternal and maternal sides. According to the inscription, the epitaph was built by the brothers of Joachim von Kneitlingen. Shortly before the university church was blown up on May 30, 1968, the epitaph was saved. It is now located on the south wall of the south aisle below the swallow's nest organ .
