Maria Evgenevna Filatova
Marija Evgenjewna Filatowa ( Russian Мария Евгеньевна Филатова ; born July 19, 1961 in Leninsk-Kuznetsky , Soviet Union ) is a former Soviet gymnast who won the 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games with the Soviet team.
Career
Filatowa's international career began at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . The Soviet team won with Nelli Kim , Lyudmila Turishcheva , Olga Korbut , Elwira Saadi , Marija Filatowa and Swetlana Grosdowa . In the all-around competition Filatowa and Grosdowa had the ninth-best result with the same number of points, but could not qualify for the individual competitions against their better-placed teammates.
After the resignation of Turishcheva, Korbut and Saadi, Filatowa won her first international medals at the 1977 European Championships in Prague . At the balance beam she received the bronze medal behind Jelena Muchina and Nelli Kim. The Soviet squad was even more successful in floor exercise , as Muchina and Filatowa both received the gold medal with the same number of points and Kim the bronze medal. In jump Filatova finished fourth in the all-around and she was fifth on uneven bars Sixth.
At the World Championships in Strasbourg in 1978 Filatova won the team competition with the Soviet squad, but could not qualify as the fourth best gymnast in her squad behind Muchina, Kim and Natalja Schaposhnikova for the individual all- around competition. She only reached the finals on the uneven bars and took fourth place there. The following year Filatowa won the silver medal behind the Romanians with the Soviet squad at the World Championships in Fort Worth .
The highlight of the season in 1980 was the Olympic Games in Moscow . In front of their home crowd, the Soviet squad won the team competition made up of Jelena Dawydowa , Natalja Schaposchnikowa, Nelli Kim, Marija Filatowa, Stella Sacharowa and Jelena Naimuschina . Filatowa only reached the finals on the uneven bars, in this competition five of the six finalists won a medal. Behind the Olympic champions Maxi Gnauck and Emilia Eberle , Steffi Kräker , Melitta Rühn and Marija Filatowa achieved the same number of points and there were three bronze medals. Only Nelli Kim went empty-handed in sixth on the uneven bars , but she won the floor freestyle level with Nadia Comăneci .
The 1981 World Gymnastics Championships also took place in Moscow. The Soviet squad with Marija Filatowa won the team title by a clear margin. In the individual all-around event , Olga Bitscherowa won , Marija Filatowa as second and Jelena Dawydowa as third completed the Soviet trio. Filatowa only reached the device finals on the balance beam and took sixth place there.
In 1982 Filatowa ended her career, she later worked in Belfast and then moved on to Rochester , New York State, where she runs a gymnastics studio.
