Jelena Vjačeslavovna Muchina ( Russian Елена Вячеславовна Мухина , scientific transliteration Elena Vjačeslavovna Muchina ; born June 1, 1960 in Moscow ; † December 22, 2006 ibid) was a Russian artistic gymnast. She was all around world champion and multiple European champion.

Life and accomplishments

Muchina ( CSKA Moscow ) had her first major success at the 1977 European Championships in Prague . Jelena Muchina was second behind the Romanian Nadia Comăneci and three-time European champion on the floor, on the uneven bars and on the balance beam in the all around gymnastics . In 1978 she became the all- around world champion in Strasbourg at the world championships in front of Nelli Kim and Natalja Schaposchnikowa and together with Nelli Kim she won the title on the floor and second place on the uneven bars and balance beam. At the European Championships in Copenhagen in 1979 , she was also European Uneven Bars and won her fourth title.

In 1979 she broke her left leg and was therefore unable to take part in the following competitions. However, she was forced to retrain early on against her will. Among other things, the difficult Thomas Salto , which, however, put a lot of strain on the leg that was not yet fully healed. Her career came to an end when she broke her cervical vertebra while doing floor exercises while preparing for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and was paralyzed from then on .

Awards

Jelena Muchina was awarded the Order of Lenin by the Soviet Union and was awarded the Silver Medal of the Olympic Order by the International Olympic Committee IOC in 1983 .
