Galina Jakowlewna Schamrai ( Russian Гали́на Я́ковлевна Шамра́й ; born October 5, 1931 in Tashkent ) is a former Soviet gymnast.

Life

Shamrai graduated from the Lenin Pedagogical Institute of the Moscow Region and then worked as a trainer at Spartak Moscow . She married the Spartak player Anatoly Ilyin , who won the gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne with the national football team of the Soviet Union. In 1958 their daughter Elena was born.

Sports

Shamrai initially trained at the Iskra Club, but later switched to the Burewestnik Sports Association in Moscow. Her first tournament was the national gymnastics championships in 1950, where she achieved eighth place in the individual all-around. In 1952 she was part of the Soviet team for the Summer Olympics in Helsinki, where she contributed to winning the team all-round competition. She also won a silver medal in group gymnastics. Another highlight of her career was the world gymnastics championships in Rome in 1954 , where she won two gold and one silver medal.

In 1956 Shamrai ended her active career and from 1975 worked as a referee at various gymnastics events. Today she lives in Moscow .
