Jelena Lvovna Schuschunowa ( Russian Елена Львовна Шушунова ; born May 23, 1969 in Leningrad ; † August 16, 2018 in Saint Petersburg , Russia ) was a Soviet gymnast . She was a two-time Olympic champion .

At the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988 Shushunova won the all-around with the Soviet team. In addition, she was also Olympic champion in the individual all-around competition. She won further medals on the balance beam (silver) and on the uneven bars (bronze).

Shushunova won a total of eleven medals at gymnastics world championships . At the 1985 World Gymnastics Championships in Montreal , she was world champion in horse jumping , individual all-around and team all-around . In 1987 in Rotterdam she won two more world championship titles in horse jumping and on the ground .

She died on August 15, 2018 as a result of pneumonia in her hometown of St. Petersburg. On the website of the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame , where she was admitted in 2004, it is noted: "Shushunova will forever be known as one of the most explosive, dynamic and original performers in the history of gymnastics."
