Morgan Elizabeth Hurd (born July 18, 2001 in Wuzhou , China ) is an American gymnast. At the 2017 World Gymnastics Championships , she won gold in the all-around competition and silver on the balance beam.

Athletic career

Hurd played her first international competition at the World Cup in Stuttgart at the beginning of 2017. At the national championships in August of the same year she was sixth in the all-around competition. Because of this result, she was appointed to the national team and nominated for the World Championships in Montreal . This was very successful: She was able to qualify as sixth place for the all-around final and as runner-up for the final on the balance beam. Completely surprisingly, she was able to win the all-around final. With 0.1 points ahead of Ellie Black , she became world champion. She also benefited from the fact that the entire American Olympic team from 2016 (including Simone Biles and Alexandra Raisman ) paused this year and the runner-up in the qualification, her team-mate Ragan Smith , and other favorites had to forego the competition due to injury. Two days later, her performance was confirmed when she won the silver medal on the balance beam.

Private life

Morgan Hurd was born in China and adopted as a toddler. Today she lives in Middletown , Delaware .
