history
The southern half of the town was granted through a grant from the Massachusetts Bath Academy Association. Gilman and Redington acquired this from Waterville. The first settler in the area was Caleb Stevens from New Hampshire with his wife and nine children. More settlers followed. The grant was sold to Captain Pettingill and Colonel Herrick of Lewiston. After further sales, Gibson, Fogg and Company of Fairfield acquired the grant. The northern half of Eustice was acquired by Clark of Massachusetts in 1831. The former governor Abner Coburn later bought the land together with his brothers.
The first organization of the area took place in 1840 in the form of a plantation under the name of Hanover. Together with all other inhabited areas, Hanover was also combined to form Plantation Jackson. After a law of the Maine Legislature in 1857 forbade the organization of more than one township in a plantation, the area of the original Township No. 1, 4th rank, was renamed under the name Eustis independently of the others on March 30, 1857 Organized in honor of the previous owner of the northern half as Plantation, Charles Eustis. On February 18, 1871, this was transferred to the organizational form Town.
