Madrid is an unincorporated community in the Unorganized Territory of East Central Franklin , in Franklin County of the state of Maine in the United States . Until 2000 the area was organized as a town . In 2000, 173 people lived there in 72 households on an area of 108.2 km².

Geographical location
Madrid is centrally located in Franklin County. The Sandy River , a tributary of the Kennebec River , flows south through the center of the area. The surface of the area is hilly.

history
The area was settled from 1807. One of the first owners of the area was Mr. Phillips, who sold it to Jacob Abbot. Early settlers included Abel Cook, David Rose, John Sargent, Lemuel Plummer, Miller Hinckley, Joseph Dunham, Ebenezer Cawkins, and Nathaniel Wells. The area was organized as a town on January 29, 1836. Previously it was known as Township No. 1, First Range West of Bingham's Kennebec Purchase (T1 R1 WBKP) .
On July 1, 2000, the town gave up its status because it was unable to bear the costs of an organized town.

Culture and sights
Buildings
In Madrid, the Madrid Village Schoolhouse was placed under a preservation order in 1995 and under the register no. 95001460 inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .
The Madrid Village Schoolhouse was built in 1872 and served as a school building until 1959. Most recently with classes from kindergarten to year 4. It is one of the few two-story school buildings. After the school closed, the building was used by the town administration, including for elections. After Madrid was disorganized, the building passed into the hands of the Madrid Historical Society.

There is no health center in Madrid. Closest health centers and hospitals are in Farmington .
Madrid does not have its own library. The closest is in Phillips.
education
Since Madrid was disorganized, it no longer belongs to any school district. It previously belonged to Regional School Union 58 / Maine School Administrative District 58 along with Avon, Kingfield, Phillips and Strong .
