M. John Harrison
Michael John Harrison (born July 26, 1945 in Rugby in the Peak District ) is a British science fiction writer.
Life
Michael John Harrison is the son of engineer Spencer Harrison and Dorothy Harrison, nee Lee. He worked as a junior teacher in Warwickshire from 1963 to 1965 and as a clerk at the Royal Masonic Charity Institute in 1966 . Since then he has been a freelance writer. From 1978 to 1979 he was editor and critic of New Worlds magazine and contributed to the New Manchester Review .
In 1971 he published his The Pastel City , a fantasy novel set in Viriconium, the last city in a distant future. People live on the rubbish and dumps of the past and use a technique they no longer understand and can no longer reproduce. This first novel was followed by another Viriconium novel ( A Storm of Wings ) in 1980 , and two volumes of stories from Viriconium in 1982 and 1984.
Together with the author Jane Johnson he also uses the pseudonym "Gabriel King".
Harrison currently lives in West London .
