Peak District
The Peak District is a highland area located in central and northern England . The Peak District is the southern end of the Pennines . Large parts of the area are over 300 m high, the highest point is the summit of the Kinder Scout at 636 m. The Peak District is traditionally divided into the "Dark Peak" area in the north, which is characterized by moors and sandstone, and the "White Peak", which is dominated by limestone. White Peak is the area where most of the people live. The Peak District as a whole is close to major metropolitan areas such as Manchester , Huddersfield , Leeds , Sheffield , Derby and Stoke-on-Trent . It extends mainly over Derbyshire . Parts of the Peak District are also in Cheshire , Staffordshire, and South and West Yorkshire . Most of the Peak District became the country's first national park in 1951 .
In an area known as Stanton Moor in the Peak District there are four megalithic sites (e.g. Five Wells ). There, north of Birchover, are the Doll Tor and the Nine Ladies , two stone circles from the Bronze Age .
