Geoff Ryman

Geoff Ryman (* 1951 in Canada ) is a Canadian science fiction and fantasy author. He coined the term mundane science fiction (roughly: "profane science fiction"). This subgenre of science fiction is characterized by the fact that its setting is usually the earth or near-earth space, and that it aims to convey a credible representation of the science and technology known today.

Life

Geoff Ryman was born the son of a journalist and a scientist. He got into writing through his mother and published his first short story in a local newspaper at the age of 8. His father, who is also artistically gifted, sparked his interest in science and SF with stories about lasers. Nevertheless, there was still a long way to go to become a writer. For one, he moved to Los Angeles with his parents at the age of 11 . There he graduated from UCLA in English and History. Possibly inspired by L.A., he wanted to be an actor . It wasn't until 1973, when he moved to England, that he began to take writing more seriously. In 1976 he sold his first short story.

In addition to his work as a writer, Geoff Ryman works as a web designer and helped bring the UK government to the Internet. Among other things, he led the teams that created the first official websites about the British Monarchy and No 10 Downing Street , and is also involved in direct.gov.uk, a website of the British government. He now teaches writing part-time at the University of Manchester and also runs a workshop on writing in Cambodia .

Geoff Ryman currently lives openly gay in London . He also owns an apartment in a major city on the Amazon in Brazil , which he visits frequently.

Almost all of his short stories and novels have been nominated for international or major national SF awards; quite a few of them also won. Ryman's greatest success so far is for his novel Air , which has won four prizes at once: the Arthur C. Clarke Award , the James Tiptree, Jr. Award , the British Science Fiction Association Award and the Sunburst Award .
