Gaylactic Spectrum Award
The Gaylactic Spectrum Award or Gaylactic Network Spectrum Award is a North American literary prize that has been awarded since 1999 for works from the fields of science fiction , fantasy and horror literature that deal positively with LGBT topics. So far, the prize has mostly been awarded at Gaylaxicon , an East Coast LGBT SF&F convention . Initially, the awarding institution was the Gaylactic Network , a North American SF&F fandom group from the LGBT area. Since 2002 the task has been handed over to the specially established Gaylactic Spectrum Awards Foundation .
So far, the prizes have been awarded in the following categories:
- Novel : novels, generally longer texts
- Short fiction : short story, novella, narrative, generally shorter texts
- Other Work : Works that are not included in the categories assigned in the respective year, e.g. film, graphic novels, etc.
- Comic Book / Graphic Novel : graphic stories, so far only given in 2003
- People's Choice Award : the winner will be determined by the participants in the convention at which the award was awarded
- Special Achievement : so far only awarded to Samuel R. Delany in 2001
- Hall of Fame : pioneering works with LGBT themes, awarded by the jury regardless of the year of publication
The categories changed over the years. Only in the Novel category was a prize awarded every year.
In addition to the trophy with a spiral galaxy on it (logo of the organization), the winner receives a small financial grant. The cost of the prize is borne by individual donations and fundraising campaigns.
