Suzy McKee Charnas (born October 22, 1939 in New York City ) is an American science fiction , horror and fantasy author.

Life

McKee Charnas was born in New York City in 1939. She writes about her origins: “I come from a long line of clever, tough, enchanting Jewish women who married clever but useless men, only to throw them out and raise their children alone.” Her parents were both artists. She attended the High School of Music and Art in New York, then Barnard College, and then went to Nigeria with the Peace Corps for two years . When she returned, she did an MA in Education from New York University . After graduating, she worked for several years as a teacher at New York's New Lincoln School , a private, experimental school with a faculty made up of "brilliant political crackpots and old-school leftists." She married in 1970 and moved to New Mexico with her husband, a lawyer .

Her debut novel, Walk to the End of the World , was published in 1974. It is the first volume of a series of novels, the Holdfast Chronicles , which has now comprised four volumes and is set in a post-apocalyptic world. Holdfast is a post-“ wasting ” community where homosexual men rule over enslaved women who are blamed for the collapse of civilization. In the second volume, Motherlines, the protagonist escapes this bondage and finds a different culture, shaped by cloned women who lead a free and carefree life on horseback. The third volume, The Furies, deals with the conflict between the two cultures, which ended with the conquest of Holdfast , but has not been resolved. A possible solution is suggested in the fourth volume, The Conqueror's Child , for which McKee Charnas was awarded the James Tiptree, Jr. Award in 1999.

In addition to the Holdfast novels, she also wrote Sorcery Hall , a fantasy novel trilogy for young people, several novels and short stories belonging to the subgenre of vampire history , as well as a drama, and a number of short stories, which also appeared in several anthologies.

She has also been an instructor at the Clarion Writers Workshops for budding science fiction writers (1984-2004) and at the Taos Writers School (1993-1996).
