Charles L. Grant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles Lewis Grant (born September 12, 1942 in Hackettstown , New Jersey ; died September 15, 2006 in Newton , New Jersey) was an American writer of horror , fantasy, and science fiction . He also used the pseudonyms Felicia Andrews, Steven Charles, Lionel Fenn, Simon Lake, and Geoffrey Marsh.

Life

After attending high school in Kearny , New Jersey, Grant went to Trinity College in Connecticut in 1960 , where he began studying theology - his father was a pastor of the Episcopal Church - but then switched to English and history, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1964 . From 1968 to 1970 he served in the military police of the US Army in Quy Nhơn in Vietnam , where he was wounded twice and was awarded the Bronze Star . After completing his studies, he worked as a teacher for English and history at various schools in New Jersey until 1975, after which he was a freelance writer. From 1973 to 1977 he was executive secretary of the Science Fiction Writers of America .

In 1973 he married Debbie Voss, with whom he had a son and a daughter. In 1982 he married the writer Kathryn Ptacek for the second time. Grant died of a heart attack in 2006 at the age of 64 after years of deteriorating health.

Grant's first publication was the short story The House of Evil , which appeared in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1968 , but did not begin to publish on a larger scale until the mid-1970s after he had given up teaching. As early as 1974 he received his first Nebula nomination for his short story The Rest Is Silence . His first novel was The Shadow of Alpha , which is set in a post-apocalyptic , relapsed barbaric world, where residents struggle with plagues and hostile androids . With two sequels to the novel was Parric-Family - Trilogy expanded.

The Hour of the Oxrun Dead followed in 1977 , the first band in the Oxrun Station series, which is about satanic activities. Oxrun Station is an imaginary town in New England, among whose residents followers of various rather unusual cults live and as a result the residents are plagued by various manifestations of evil and children develop paranormal powers. The series includes 11 novels and a few short stories. These include The Sound of Midnight (1978), in which followers of a Welsh cult serve dark forces, and in The Bloodwind (1982) evil acts as a demonic wind that can take the form of a beast.

Grant is a representative of quiet horror , who dispenses with blatant and bloodthirsty forms of horror and concentrates on the psychological elaboration of the everyday horror of middle-class life in the American suburbs and leaves the coloring of supernatural horror largely up to the imagination of the reader.

Grant's better-known horror novels include The Nestling (1982, German as Die Schwingen des Todes ), in which a small town in Wyoming is haunted by an Indian demon in the form of an eagle, and The Pet (1986, German: Spukpferd ), where the fears and Adolescent protagonist's frustrations as a black stallion take on physical form.

In addition to Grant's Quiet Horror , his works include a number of stories from the field of dark fantasy , a mixture of genres of horror and fantasy. Examples include the short stories When All the Children Call My Name (1977), Come Dance with Me on My Pony's Grave (1973) and The Three of Tens (1975). Other sub-genres in which Grant was active were comic or parodic fantasy, an example here is the Quest for the White Duck trilogy, which Grant wrote under the pseudonym Lionel Fenn, as well as comic science fiction, for example the Kent Montana series (also called Lionel Fenn).

Grant was also honored as the editor of anthologies , in particular the Shadows series, which appeared in 11 volumes and a selection volume from 1978 to 1991.
