Quy Nhon ( Vietnamese : Quy Nhơn ) is a city in Vietnam and the capital of the Bình Định province .
geography
Quy Nhon is a coastal city and is located roughly in the middle of Vietnam. The catchment area of Quy Nhon covers approximately 284.28 km² and about 255,000 inhabitants (2004) live there, 234,000 of them in the city itself.
history
The region around Quy Nhon was the center of the Cham kingdom Vijaya from the 11th century. The citadel of Cha Ban, not far from the city, was the seat of the royal dynasty. In 1471 the Vietnamese conquered Vijaya and then occupied the region. The Cham fled to the south or to Cambodia.
Historically, Quy Nhon was a city that lived mainly from fishing and agriculture. During the Vietnam War there was a large presence of the American armed forces in the city and its surroundings with a large logistics base and a newly built airport right in what is now downtown Quy Nhon. The airport area was completely closed at the end of the 1990s, redesigned and is now the new center of Quy Nhon.
economy
For the economic development of Quy Nhon, the direct coastal location in particular plays a major role. Quy Nhon today has two ports with container terminals. Quy Nhon itself has several industrial zones as well as the Nhơn H Wirtschaftsi economic zone on the Phương Mai peninsula (also Ban Mai) belonging to the city of Quy Nhon, which is connected directly to the city center via a bridge through the Thai Nai lagoon, which was completed in 2006.
The main industries in Quy Nhon are: wood processing, natural stone processing, animal feed production, other small-scale processing businesses and tourism.
