Until 1982 Bauer worked as a pastor in Aresing , his successor was Josef Gleich. In 1983, Bauer and the bricklayer foreman Josef Zanker founded the Marienkinder in Mindelheim , which had around 140 members. The Marienkinder rejected Pope John Paul II and the prayer book Praise God , which is why Bauer and Zanker were excommunicated in 1985 by the Augsburg Bishop Josef Stimpfle .

The Marienkinder announced World War III for 1999 and are said to have had up to 200 members at times. In 1993 there was a physical argument between Bauer and the brawler, who had been convicted several times for bodily harm , most recently without parole , which the latter won.

In the same year, Bauer turned away from the Marienkinder, his excommunication was lifted and he returned to the Roman Catholic Church under Bishop Viktor Josef Dammertz . Bauer was controversial within the Roman Catholic Church because of his commitment to the angel work . Shortly before his death, he published three books in the sedevacantist publisher Anton Schmid in Durach .
