After leaving school, he wanted to be a musician first, but changed his mind later differently and studied instead psychology at Saint Louis University , before the Columbia University in the City of New York changed, where he became a MFA - diploma in the subject Creative Writing gained. He started his film career while studying in New York City , when he got a part-time position at the American independent film production company Troma Entertainment and wrote the screenplay for the B-movie Tromeo and Juliet in 1996 . That film achieved cult status in 1997 and was shown in numerous cinemas around the world.
Further film and television productions for Troma followed, sometimes even as a director and actor. During the two years that he worked for Troma, he became President of the Production Department and ran a small television station in the Netherlands: “Troma's Edge TV”. In 1997, Gunn said goodbye to Troma in order to be able to devote himself to his own projects. His debut work, The Specials from 2000, for which he also appeared as a producer and actor in addition to the script, was filmed by director Craig Mazin with Rob Lowe , Jamie Kennedy and his brother Sean Gunn . During the shooting of this film he met his future wife, actress Jenna Fischer , whom he married on October 7, 2000 and from whom he divorced on September 6, 2007.
This was followed by scripts for major Hollywood productions such as Scooby-Doo in 2002 and the films Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Scooby Doo 2 - The Monsters Are Going (also 2004). With the two scripts for Dawn of the Dead and the sequel to Scooby Doo , Gunn made cinema history in 2004, as he was the first screenwriter to hit number 1 on the US box office with two films in a row (March 19 and March 26, 2004 ).
Gunn made his directorial debut in 2006 with the horror comedy Slither , which was received controversially despite good reviews from the audience and was unable to bring in the production costs. Since that film he has worked regularly with actor Michael Rooker .
In addition to his work for the film, Gunn also wrote a novel, The Toy Collector , and was involved in the web series James Gunn's PG Porn from 2008 , in which he parodied pornography with his brothers Brian and Sean.
In 2014, the comic book adaptation Guardians of the Galaxy was released , for which Gunn was responsible for the direction and script. In 2015 he received the British Fantasy Award for the film . Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 followed in 2017 . A third part has been announced, but Gunn was fired from Disney on July 20, 2018 after the company was leaked several tweets from 2008 to 2011 by the conservative news site The Daily Caller . The tweets showed statements by Gunn making fun of rape and pedophilia. Gunn explained the day before that he had done this consciously in order to achieve reactions with these provocations and breaking taboos. In March 2019, he was rehabilitated by Disney and is now set to stage the third part of the series.
In October 2018, it was announced that James Gunn would write the screenplay for Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros. after his release from Disney . There is also the option of taking over the director's position in the film.
