The Specials is an American comedy film from the year 2000 .

action

Noticing that she has super skills, Shelly signs up with her admired superhero group, The Specials , to be the newest member. But their idols are anything but great. It's not just the competition with other superhero groups like the Amazing Trio or the Crusaders , or the chronic lack of money. It is the character weaknesses and neuroses to which the heroes succumb. The leader The Strobe has to struggle with all sorts of problems, especially since Valiant joined the Crusaders . But at least the group will soon have some money at their disposal, because thanks to the royalty income that promises 11% of sales, their soon-to-be-released action figures that Toscotoys will release, the group can afford something in the future. But for the dolls to sell, the superheroes have to behave flawlessly and represent role models, because "with superpowers comes super-responsibility".

But the heroes quickly forget Strobe's speech and fall into their old role models. US Bill shows himself to be the idiot he always was. The conflict between Deadly Girl and Ms. Indestructible is smoldering just like the marital conflict between Ms. Indestructible and The Strobe , because the latter sees himself permanently as a messenger of God and has to stylize himself. Meanwhile, the Crusaders are also trying to poach the by far most popular superhero, The Weevil . He also feels under-challenged with the specials and would like to accept government contracts, but since the other superheroes are just too special, that would probably never happen.

The big celebration for the presentation of the action figures becomes an absolute disaster. All figures are badly hit and hardly correspond to reality. This is because the toy company wanted to save as much money as possible and therefore took discarded action figures from the 1970s, which they simply re-costumed. After Strobe discovers in the parking lot that his wife is sleeping with Weevil , he feels so humiliated that he announces at a short press conference inside that he will cancel the specials . The shock is deep and the first thoughts are widening what will become of the other members. The feminist-lesbian superhero group Fem Five wants to recruit Deadly Girl. Weevil applies to the Crusaders and is accepted there. Most of them are disillusioned and Amok wants to become a super villain again.

Shelly's desire has always been to be more than a normal person, which is why membership in the Specials means everything to her, even if her only super ability is laying eggs. And that's exactly what Weever makes fun of when he speaks on TV about his decision to switch from the Specials to the Crusaders . He just didn't want to be compared to a bunch of degenerates. As a result, the Specials team, which previously wanted to hold their last meeting, now stand together and suddenly receive a major government contract. All other superhero groups are prevented, so they are tasked with protecting the Pentagon from the giant ants.

criticism

"Over-the-top, but rather modest parody of the looming boom in superhero films of the early 2000s, which fails mainly because of its own potential."

publication

The film opened in theaters on September 22, 2000 and could only gross a little more than $ 13,000. The film has been available on DVD in Germany since December 6, 2006 .
