Lollipop Chainsaw ( Japanese ロ リ ポ ッ プ チ ェ ー ン ソ ー , Roripoppu Chēnsō ) is a video game that was created by the Japanese programming studio Grasshopper Manufacture under the direction of the cult game designer Gōichi Suda , also known as SUDA51. The story of the game comes from the well-known screenwriter James Gunn , who also wrote the screenplay for Zack Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead . The game was distributed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Kadokawa Shoten and belongs to the hack and slay genre. It was released for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 .

action

The player takes on the role of Juliet Starling . Juliet is the team captain of the cheerleaders at San Romero High School . On top of that, she comes from a family of zombie hunters, in whose business she helps. On her 18th birthday, Juliet wants to meet her boyfriend Nick Carlyle in the park in front of the high school, but notices on the way that the city is being overrun by zombies. From the parking lot she fights her way through the hordes of zombies and tries to save the survivors. After reaching the park, Juliet discovers that Nick has struggled to survive but has to watch him get bitten. To protect him from being transformed, she beheads Nick with her chainsaw and uses a magical ritual to keep his head alive.

Nick feels overwhelmed with the new situation, but Juliet takes him along. Since he has acquired magical powers as a result of the ritual, it is necessary for their progress in the game. Juliet tries to clear the high school of the zombies and to bring more survivors to safety. However, the zombies also have various gadgets. There are those who are on fire or have an explosive belt attached to blow themselves up. Juliet and Nick fight their way through high school to find their instructor, Japanese sushi master Morikawa, and to seek advice from him.

The meeting then takes place in the foyer. Morikawa explains that this zombie flood is related to a disturbance in the universe, for example someone has blown up the dimensional wall between this world and the rotten land with the help of black magic and explosives. The gas that escapes turns people into zombies. However, the culprit appears to be either in the foyer or outside of the high school. Juliet searches in the foyer and manages to kill the zombies there. But a zombie suicide squad destroys the building, while Juliet and Nick escape.

Outside, Swan, one of Juliet's classmates, reveals himself to be the perpetrator, who acts out of sheer vindictiveness, as he was ostracized and bullied by classmates and society. He summons five top zombies to declare himself the god of this sphere. Morikawa tries to stop her, but dies trying. As a farewell, he gives Juliet one last gift with the Chainsaw Dash, before she confronts the first head zombie with the zombie punk rocker Zed and kills him.

After her victory, she sees the Viking Metal zombie Vikke, the second top zombie, who operates from a floating Viking ship and throws lightning onto the earth. At the same time, Juliet sees her older sister Cordelia, an excellent sniper, who is climbing onto the ship. She throws her a birth present, but since the parachute slips due to the wind, she first has to fight her way through the San Romero ballpark to receive her present, which turns out to be an extension of her chainsaw, a cannon called Chainsaw Blaster. After receiving it, Juliet and Nick Vikke surrender and can kill him too.

Juliet and Nick are thrown to the nearby O'Bannon Farm, where they meet Juliet's younger sister Rosalind. She has bought a school bus and races through the farm uncontrolled. Juliet and Nick pursue Rosalind, but she always escapes. In between, the two of them are also on a trip that is triggered by a mushroom, during which they have to deal with the zombie chicken chat. Finally, Juliet and Nick manage to catch up with Rosalind, but through a rash statement by Rosalind, Juliet does not recognize her sister in this person, but the third head zombie, the hippie zombie Mariska, who was also responsible for the trips. She is also killed by Juliet.

Juliet notices that Rosalind has continued to disappear without a trace. The fourth head zombie communicates the only clue telepathically. He keeps Rosalind trapped in the Fulci Fun Center . When Juliet's father Gideon appears, they set out to free their relatives. Her plan is for Juliet and Nick to storm through the main entrance while Gideon enters the center from the roof. On their way to becoming the head zombie, Juliet and Nick have to survive several computer game-like levels before they can face him, the funk zombie Josey. Juliet looks like the sure winner on his UFO, but Josey threatens to kill Rosalind if she doesn't give up. But he notices too late that Gideon has already saved her, which is why Juliet finally settles Josey.

With the reunited family, Gideon is now planning to storm the unfinished cathedral of San Romero, where the last head zombie is staying. Juliet manages to get to this with the help of her sisters. The last opponent is the rock'n'roll zombie Lewis Legend, but he can't hold his own against Juliet either.

Swan is very pleased about this, because through the death of the five top zombies and their incantations he can free the strongest zombie, the huge killabilly . However, Juliet does not feel strong enough to hit him, but her master Morikawa reports from the afterlife to help her. With his help, she manages to get to Killabilly and fight him. But this is far too strong, which is why Gideon jumps at Killabilly with a motorcycle full of dynamite and can wound his face at the risk of his life. Morikawa asks Juliet to go through the hole into the inside of the giant zombie in order to destroy it from the inside.

Once there, Juliet and Nick get to the heart of Killabilly, where Swan is beheaded and tied up. The only method to destroy him is a so-called Nick bomb , a self-destructive attack by Nick, which Juliet refuses to do out of love for him. Only when Nick confesses his love for her and agrees for this suicidal mission does she accept it. She places Nick's head on Swan's body, which initiates Killabilly's self-destruction, killing both him and Nick.

In the afterlife, however, Nick receives the message that he will get back both life and a body for his selfless commitment, albeit with a mix-up. So he comes back to life in front of Juliet with the much smaller body of Morikawa. Gideon also survived his action. Juliet, her family and Nick return home to where their mother is already in the kitchen. From here on the story splits into two ends.

Sad ending: In the sad ending, mother Starling turned into a zombie. The family screams in fear as the picture fades out.

Happy ending: This ending only appears if the player manages to save all students in the first two levels from the zombies. In the happy ending, the Starling family celebrates Juliet's birthday with Nick, with Nick giving his presents to Juliet, including a box of chocolates with the inscription Fin (French: end).

Gameplay

The player controls Juliet Starling. The combat system is similar to that of other hack-and-slay games like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta . The main weapon used is a magic chainsaw, which can be used to cut as well as shoot with the chainsaw blaster. Juliet can carry a maximum of 36 pieces of ammunition for the blaster, which can be refilled by collecting lipstick-like symbols. In addition, the player has pom-poms with which Juliet can weaken and stun the zombies and then kill them more easily with the chainsaw. This also gives the possibility of combination attacks. Another ability of the chainsaw is the chainsaw dash. This allows Juliet to increase her speed. B. also perform large and small jumps from preset ramps.

In order to upgrade Juliet both physically and technically, the player needs gold medals, which he receives in different methods. Some gold medals can be obtained by killing zombies, in hiding places such as vending machines or simply on the way. There are platinum medals. a. in killing dangerous zombies. The player can purchase updates and bonus materials for the game from the in-game online shop chop2shop.zom. You can also buy lollipops here, which restore Juliet's health by 50%, and Nick tickets.

A specialty here is the glitter hunt. If Juliet kills more than three zombies at once, a small cutscene is displayed showing how many she has killed with this one attack. Juliet can kill a maximum of seven zombies at once. For a glitter hunt, Juliet receives several gold medals and at least one platinum medal. If dangerous zombies are among the killed zombies, there are additional bonus medals.

Juliet has the ability to gain stars for every zombie killed. These stars are collected. When the container, which can be seen on the display at the bottom left of the screen, has been filled, the player can trigger a mode that is similar to the star mode of Mario from the Super Mario series. Juliet gets stronger for a moment and can kill zombies directly.

Nick, who hangs the majority of the game only as a head as a kind of accessory on Juliet's clothes, occupies an important key position in the gameplay. So he has the ability to take over a zombie body to clear heavy obstacles out of the way. A Quicktime event helps the player use this skill. In addition, other Nick skills can be activated in the Chop2Shop, e.g. For example, you can pour out gold medals and lollipops at Nick Shake, or Nick Popper's head is fired from an extended version of the Chainsaw Blaster, which stuns enemy zombies. In order to use these abilities, the player needs nick tickets, which appear sporadically during the game or can be purchased in the Chop2Shop.

Lollipop Chainsaw does not have a direct online mode, but the ranked mode gives the player the option of entering a global leaderboard and comparing it with the scores of other players.

In addition to the normal costume, there is the possibility of other characters from the Manga / Anime Highschool of the Dead (Rei Miyamoto and Saeko Busujima), Deadman Wonderland (Shiro), Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? (Haruna wearing chainsaws) and Manyū Hiken-chō (Manyū Chifusa).

In addition to original songs created by the Japanese composer Akira Yamaoka, the soundtrack also includes licensed songs.
