content

The student Ganta Igarashi ( 五十 嵐 丸 太 , Igarashi Ganta ) lives in Tokyo, which was badly damaged by an earthquake . He is a survivor of the disaster that sank three-quarters of Tokyo into the sea. Still, people try to lead a normal life, so Ganta goes to school with his friends. One day, however, a strange man dressed in red appears, hovering in front of the classroom windows. Before they can even react, visibly shocked, there is a kind of explosion that devastates the entire room. When Ganta comes to, he finds himself in the middle of the rubble and has to watch as the attacker carries the head of his best school friend with him as a trophy. However, it is quickly noticed. Seeing himself dead, Ganta gets a red crystal implanted in his chest before he loses consciousness.

When he regained consciousness in a hospital, he was arrested immediately for being blamed for the murders. Ganta, who no longer understands the world, has to endure how fake evidence is used against him and how he is ultimately sentenced to death. He is taken by everyone to be the culprit in the privatized prison Deadman Wonderland , which looks like an amusement park from the outside , where his execution is to take place. Once there, he must first familiarize himself with the rules there. Each of the inmates is put on a collar that determines their position and can also kill them by injecting poison.

In the prison he quickly becomes aware of the harsh customs and gets to feel them himself, especially since he is also very notorious due to the staged incident. Since he is still quite young, he is physically inferior to the other inmates and quickly threatens to become the victim of attacks, in which the corrupt and sadistic guards do not intervene. Before it gets that far, however, he meets the strange albino girl Shiro ( シ ロ ). It reminds him very strongly of his former school friend, but it is difficult to assess because she doesn't seem to take everything seriously and regards it as a game. She is very acrobatic and tries to defend him against his attackers. However, it is not strong enough and both threaten to be beaten to death. Unexpectedly, a bomb placed by the prison director explodes, causing part of the building to collapse. He had allegedly planned to have the sentenced to death disappear through an "accident". Ganta, who cannot avoid the falling debris, unleashes the power of the crystal for the first time and can thus unconsciously hold off the debris before it collapses again.

In the prison infirmary, he again meets Yō Takami ( 鷹 見 羊 , Takami Yō ), who was injured with a sword by the female main guard Makina ( マ キ ナ , Makina ) immediately after his arrival . Ganta learns more about the rules of the prison from him. The inmates' collar is designed in such a way that it automatically kills anyone who does not eat a “candy” (usually called a “candy”) within three days, which he can buy with enough points from one of the macabre games. Since Ganta hasn't eaten any candy for two days, he is forced to take part in a game called the Dog Race . During the preparations he had to make the involuntary acquaintance with Kazumasi Kōzuma, who, along with many others, is also preparing to win the race. However, the tall fighter is free to use any means to avoid possible competition in advance. Fortunately for Ganta, Makina shows up in time to open the race, in which Shiro also takes part, while Yō has already been so wounded by Kazumasi that he is being transported away.

The race itself is an obstacle course that is performed in front of the public for amusement. However, the audience is made to believe that everything is just a matter of fact. In reality, the traps lurking there are keen and quickly result in the death of many participants who cannot even avoid it, otherwise they will be shot by the guards. In addition, the game only knows one winner, so there is a competition between Kazumasi, who is okay with any means, and Ganta. With this, Ganta makes use of the environment and also gets help from Shiro, who accepts any risk. At the end of the game, Ganta is saved again by Shiro so that he could secure the prize for himself. However, he does without it when he has to choose between Shiro's life and victory.

Characters

Ganta Igarashi

Ganta Igarashi is the protagonist of the series. He is the only survivor after the explosion in his school's classroom and is sentenced to death in Deadman Wonderland due to false evidence. In prison, he meets Shiro, who has known him for a long time and makes direct friends with him. She saves his life several times at the games. In the course of history he gets to know the power behind the branches of sin and has vowed to hold the "red man" responsible for the death of his friends and classmates accountable.

Shiro

Shiro is an albino girl, has a very hyperactive personality and likes to snack. Although Ganta seems to know you very well, he cannot remember her, and the authorities of Deadman Wonderland do not seem to know her existence at all, which is why she can move about the site relatively freely. She shows sportiness and is much stronger than you might think, since she saves Ganta several times. However, Shiro seems to have secrets related to Ganta's past.

Makina

Makina is Deadman Wonderland's chief prison guard. She is keen to keep order in prison and expresses this through her dominant personality. She sees herself as an absolute power figure over Deadman Wonderland, and therefore regards her orderly interests as above the interests of the seedy owner of the prison, Tamaki, although many of the secrets about Deadman Wonderland seem to be unknown to her. Furthermore, Makina is aware of her attractiveness and is very dry about the occupants.

Tamaki

Tamaki is the mysterious owner of Deadman Wonderland. He has posed as Ganta's defense lawyer and forged evidence to obtain Ganta's death sentence in his prison, and has plans of his own with him and other users of the Sin Branch, the secrecy of which contributes to Makina's dissatisfaction. He is crazy about toys and has sadistic traits.

Senji

Like Ganta, Senji is a bearer of the sin branch and has very theatrical traits, such as weakness towards female characters. Despite the fight with Ganta, he befriends Ganta and wants to support him during his stay in prison.

Yō Takami

Yō is Ganta's cellmate, and although he is friendly and helpful towards him, he uses Ganta for his own plans, which are mainly intended to result in the rescue of his sister Minatsuki.

Minatsuki Takami

Minatsuki is Yō's little sister and also a Sin Branch user. Her mother left her behind in the great earthquake, what was left of Minatsuki's childhood trauma . She seems to have a split personality that alternates between childish-innocent and vulgar-sadistic, depending on the situation in which she finds herself. She names primroses as her favorite flowers.

publication

The manga has been published in Japan since 2007 in the manga magazine Shōnen Ace published by Kadokawa Shoten . The series ended in the September issue of the magazine, which appeared on July 26, 2013. The chapters have also been published in 13 edited volumes . The volumes of the manga sold over 100,000 copies each in Japan.

Kadokawa Media is also releasing a Chinese version of the series in Taiwan, a French version from Kana, an English version from Tokyopop . In the United States, the third volume made the New York Times' manga bestseller list . A German translation has been published by Tokyopop since April 2011, with two volumes of the Japanese edition each being combined into one volume, as was the case with Elfen Lied . The last volume was an exception due to the uneven number of volumes. It was published on Tokyopop in 2014.

Differences Between Manga and Anime

  • In the anime, Minatsuki is buried by a shelf of flowers in the earthquake, but instead of saving her daughter, the mother grabs a flower pot and runs away. In the manga we learn that her mother was found dead in the rubble, and Minatsuki mentions in the fight against Ganta that her mother tore herself away from her hand during the earthquake in order to save herself (which is shown in a flashback a little later ), whereupon Minatsuki then slayed her out of anger with her sin branch powers.

music

Narasaki composed the music for the series. The opening credits One Reason comes from fade, for the credits the title Shiny Shiny by Nirgilis was used.
