Santovka (until 1948 in Slovak "Santov"; Hungarian Szántó ) is a municipality in Okres Levice within Nitriansky kraj in Slovakia with about 800 inhabitants.

geography

The municipality is located in the Ipeľská pahorkatina (Eipel hill country), which in turn belongs to the Danube hill country and thus to the Slovak Danube lowlands . It is located on the brook Búr, a right tributary of the Ipeľ (German Eipel ). Santovka is located on the national road 564 and is 16 kilometers southeast of Levice and 19 kilometers northwest of Šahy .

Administratively, the municipality is divided into parts of the municipality of Santovka and Malinovec, which was incorporated in 1964 (until 1948 "Maďarovce", in Hungarian Hévmagyarád ).

history

Today's municipal area was already settled in the Paleolithic. The Maďarovce culture is named after a settlement from the Bronze Age . The place itself was first mentioned in writing in 1157 as Zanthow and was an agricultural place.

However, Santovka is best known for its carbon thermal springs. Although it has been known in writing since the 16th century, it was not until 1742 that a health resort was built here. Thanks to the healing effects of the sour water, the local population was spared various waves of plague. The water was also known in Europe, which is confirmed by various awards from exhibitions in Vienna (1873, 1907), Berlin (1908), Budapest (1907), Madrid (1907), Trieste (1882) and others.

Today the municipality is also known for the mineral water Santovka and there is a thermal bath in the village.
