Ipeľský Sokolec (until 1948 Slovak "Sakalos"; Hungarian Ipolyszakállos or Szakállos ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with 826 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) that the Levice District , part of the Nitriansky kraj heard.

Townscape

The municipality is located in the eastern part of the Slovak Danube lowlands on the right bank of the Ipeľ , which forms the state border with Hungary here. At the lower end of the village the river takes in the small stream Jelšovka . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 116  m nm and is 19 kilometers from Želiezovce , 20 kilometers from Šahy and 33 kilometers from Levice .

Neighboring municipalities are Lontov and Kubáňovo in the north, Tésa in the northeast, Perőcsény in the east, Vámosmikola in the south, Bielovce in the southwest and Šalov in the west.

history

Roman Catholic Church

The place was first mentioned in writing as Sakalos in 1386 and derives its name from the royal falconers who lived here at the time . A year later Sigismund von Luxemburg donated the property to László Sárói , and in 1437 the village was mortgaged. In the 16th century the village was in the domain of the Lewenz Castle, in the 18th century it belonged to the Esterházy and Huszár families. At that time, a large estate specializing in sheep, cattle and horse breeding was created. In 1828 there were 115 houses and 695 inhabitants who were employed as farmers and winemakers.

Until 1919, the place in Hont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. From 1938 to 1945 he was once again part of Hungary due to the First Vienna Arbitration .

population

According to the 2011 census, Ipeľský Sokolec had 861 inhabitants, including 580 Magyars , 232 Slovaks , 24 Roma and four Czechs . 21 residents gave no information on ethnicity .

709 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 34 residents to the Reformed Church, 21 residents to the Evangelical Church AB and five residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church. 38 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 54 residents was not determined.
