Bátovce (German women's market , Hungarian Bát ) is a municipality in western Slovakia . It is located in the middle of the Bátovská kotlina basin on the Sikenica River , about 14 km from Levice .
history
The community was indirectly described as early as the 11th century, but was first mentioned in writing in 1267 as villa Bat . The place was quickly granted city rights and was later elevated to a royal free city . German colonists mined here; However, the development was stopped by Turkish invasions, poor yields from mining and the parallel viticulture. The German population emigrated or was Slovakized. In 1876 the city was downgraded from a Royal Free City to a simple village. Until 1918, the place was the seat of the chair district administration within the Hungarian county of Hont .
Attractions
- Protestant neo-Gothic church from 1873 with a free-standing church tower
- Catholic church with roots in the 13th century, modified in Baroque style in 1730
The southern district of Jalakšová also belongs to the municipality ; this was incorporated in 1944. From 1895 to 1972 Kmeťovce , since 1973 a part of Drženice municipality , was also part of the village.
The German name of the place is said to be derived from the time of occupation under the Turks; these drove the women from the area together here and sold them as slaves.
