Jur nad Hronom (until 1955 Slovak "Svaty Jur nad Hronom" - to 1927 "Hronský Svaty Jur"; Hungarian Garamszentgyörgy - until 1907 Szentgyörgy ) is a municipality in the west of Slovakia with 961 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) that the Okres Levice , part of the Nitriansky kraj .

geography

The municipality is located in the eastern part of the Slovak Danube lowlands , on the left bank of the Hron . The municipality is flat and deforested except for alluvial forests along the Hron. The center of the village is at an altitude of 146  m nm and is 11 kilometers from Želiezovce and 13 kilometers from Levice .

Neighboring municipalities are Starý Hrádok in the north and north-east, Hontianska Vrbica in the east, Zbrojníky in the south-east, Šarovce in the south and south-west, Tekovské Lužany in the west and Turá and Žemliare in the north-west.

history

George's Church

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1276 as Sanctus Georgius . Between 1312 and 1321 the village belonged to the domain of Matthäus Csák's minor kingdom. In 1424 Jur nad Hronom was the seat of one of the four counties of predialists and thus under the rule of the Archdiocese of Gran . In 1558 the village was set on fire by the Turks for not paying tributes. According to a Turkish tax register, there were 47 households, 65 taxpayers and two mills in 1664. In 1828 there were 93 houses and 564 residents who were employed as farmers and cattle herders.

Until 1919, the place in Bars County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. From 1938 to 1945 he was once again part of Hungary due to the First Vienna Arbitration .

According to the 2011 census, Jur nad Hronom had 920 inhabitants, including 562 Slovaks , 318 Magyars , 11 Czechs and one Roma and one Ukrainian . 27 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .

361 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 224 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, 145 residents to the Reformed Church, 14 residents to the Brother Church, 10 residents each to the Methodist Church and 10 to the Greek Catholic Church and one resident to the Czechoslovak Hussite Church; two residents professed a different denomination. 109 inhabitants were without religious denomination and the denomination of 44 inhabitants was not determined.
