history

Church in the Lipník district

The present urban area was settled in the Stone Age. In the 9th century there was a Slavic fortress here, at the same time as further settlement of the area, which continued in the 10th century. Tlmače was mentioned for the first time in 1075 in a document from King Géza I about goods donated to the Abbey of Hronský Beňadik as Talmach . At that time, according to this document, Tlmače was a fishing village (villa piscatorum) . In 1209 part of the place was under the rule of the Persch Castle, in the 14th century it was owned by several noble families as well as the abbey of Hronský Beňadik. In 1543 five porta were listed in a tax register . In 1565 the property came to the Gran chapter.

The 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries were troubled times: at the beginning of the 17th century, Ottoman troops looted Tlmače, which was temporarily part of the Ottoman Empire. In May 1664 an army under the imperial general de Souches crossed the Hron, which in July 1664 was able to defeat an Ottoman relief army in the battle of Lewenz. In 1709 a battle between an imperial army and Kuruc took place near Tlmače during the Rákoczi uprising .

In 1715 the village had 19 taxpayers, in 1828 there were 38 houses and 250 inhabitants in the agricultural town.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Bars County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In September 1936 a concrete bridge over the Hron was opened to traffic. Between 1938 and 1945, Tlmače was a border town to Hungary as a result of the First Vienna Arbitration .

In 1951 the construction of a plant structure was completed. On January 1, 1986, the place was given city status. In the same year, the neighboring towns of Malé Kozmálovce and Veľké Kozmálovce were merged with the city, but were spun off again in 1995.
