Čajkov (Hungarian Csejkő ) is a municipality in the west-center of Slovakia with 948 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to Okres Levice , part of Nitriansky kraj .

The municipality is located in the northern part of the Ipeľská pahorkatina hill country , part of the Slovak Danube lowlands and in the Schemnitz Mountains . The place is traversed by the Čajkovský creek in the Hron river system , and vineyards can be found on the slopes of the Schemnitz Mountains. The center of the village is at an altitude of 188  m nm and is nine kilometers from Levice .

Neighboring municipalities are Tekovská Breznica in the north, Devičany in the northeast, Nová Dedina in the east, Hronské Kosihy in the south and Rybník in the west.

history

The Čajkov municipality has been populated since the Stone Age; Previous archaeological finds point to settlements of the Lengyel culture , from the Bronze, Hallstatt, Latène ages and the time of the Moravian Empire.

The place itself was first mentioned in writing in 1276 as Chewku and initially belonged to the abbey of Hronský Beňadik and then gradually became part of the estate of the Archdiocese of Gran . The first church was consecrated in 1450. In the late 16th and 17th centuries, the village was affected several times due to the Turkish wars : in 1599 it was burned down by the Turks, in 1624 a total of 202 residents were dragged away. In 1720 Čajkov had a mill, a restaurant and 70 taxpayers, in 1828 there were 143 houses and 1000 inhabitants who lived from agriculture and viticulture.

Until 1918, the place in Persch County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 1013 inhabitants in Čajkov, including 988 Slovaks, two Magyars and one Ukrainian; two residents belonged to a different ethnic group. 20 residents gave no information in this regard. 924 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, four residents to the Evangelical Church AB, two residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Greek Catholic Church, the Jewish community and the Reformed Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 31 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 48 residents was not determined.
