Želiezovce (German rarely Zelis , Hungarian Zseliz - until 1895 Zeliz - older also Zeléz ) is a city in central Slovakia .
It was mentioned for the first time in 1274 and is divided into the following districts:
- Jarok
- Karolína
- Mikula (incorporated in 1967)
- Rozina
- Svodov (incorporated in 1976)
- Veľký Dvor
- Želiezovce
Until 1918 the city belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . She came back to Hungary for a short time from 1938 to 1945 through the First Vienna Arbitration . Since January 1, 1993 (separation of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia) it has been part of Slovakia.
Attractions
The originally Gothic Catholic St. John's Church, built before 1337, rebuilt in the 15th century, renovated in 1884, was rebuilt in 1954 after war damage. Some Gothic portals and arches as well as wall paintings from around 1430 are still preserved. The main altar dates from the 19th century, built on a Roman sarcophagus from the 2nd century. Baroque goblets and a Rococo monstrance are also preserved.
In a park (Franz Schubert Park) the Eszterházy Palace is a baroque complex from 1720 expanded in the classicism of the late 18th century. There is a memorial room for the composer Franz Schubert , who visited there in 1818 and 1824 and gave music lessons to the children of the Eszterházy family.
Eszterházy's tomb, a neo-Gothic mausoleum from the second half of the 19th century, is located in the Catholic cemetery.
