Location of Hont in today's Slovakia

The area is located in southern Slovakia and is divided between the Nitriansky kraj and the Banskobystrický kraj . The Hungarian name "Hont" is now used as an unofficial name for this area, as a whole it belongs to the official Poiplie tourist region . The name itself is derived from the former Hont Castle (located in today's Hungary on the border with Slovakia, southeast of Šahy). Together with the region south of what is now Hungary, which is also called Hont , it formed the Hungarian county of Hont until 1918 .
