List of traditional regions of Slovakia
This list provides an overview of the regions and counties of today's Slovakia during the Hungarian rule over this country. Most of these terms are still used today.
The following regions were / are (Slovak name, if different, in brackets):
- Abaujwar / Abau ( Abov )
- Gemer / Gömör ( Gemer )
- Hont county
- Kischütz ( Kysuce , German name is extremely rare)
- Liptov ( Liptov )
- Hon
- Neograd / Neuburg ( Novohrad )
- Arwa ( Orava )
- Sharosh ( Šariš )
- Zips ( Spiš )
- Perch ( Tekov )
- Tornau ( Turňa )
- Fall ( turiec )
- Semplin ( Zemplín )
- Sole ( Zvolen )
The names of the other historical counties (also called counties ) that were not also regions are:
- Pressburg County ( Pressburg / Bratislava county seat )
- Neutra County ( Neutra / Nitra county seat )
- Trenčín County ( Trenčín county seat )
- Komorn County ( Komorn / Komárno county seat , southern part in today's Hungary)
- Gran County ( Gran / Esztergom / Ostrihom county seat , southern part in today's Hungary)
- Ung county ( Ungvár / Užhorod county seat , nowadays mostly part of Ukraine ).
Another region, the name of which was coined recently and which was not a county, is the Hauerland .
