Location of Novohrad in today's Slovakia

The area of the former county is now in southern Slovakia and what is now northern Hungary . The Slovak name "Novohrad" is now used as an unofficial name for this area (in the sense of tourist regions , the area belongs to the Ipeľ region). The name itself is derived from the former castle Neograd (Hungarian Nógrád, southwest of Rétság ) in today's Hungary.

The center of the Slovak part of the landscape is in Lučenec and lies entirely in the Lučenec district , mainly in the Poltár district , partly in the Veľký Krtíš district and in small parts in the Zvolen , Detva and Rimavská Sobota districts .
