Hauerland

The Hauerland is a collective term for the former German language islands of central Slovakia , especially those around the cities Kremnica ( Slovak Kremnica , Hungarian Körmöcbánya ), German samples ( Slovak Nitrianske Pravno , Hungarian Németpróna ) and Hochwies ( Slovak Veľké Pole , Hungarian Pálosnagymező ). This designation gained acceptance in place of individual terms (such as Kremnitz-Deutschprobner Sprachinsel) at the end of the 1930s . It probably comes from Josef Hanika and was propagated by Ambros Grosz .

The villages were created as part of the German settlement in the east in the 14th century. Its inhabitants were assigned to the group of Carpathian Germans .
