The municipality is located in the Kremnica Mountains on the Turiec River , which has its origin further east of the municipality. Administratively, the municipality is divided into the municipal parts Dolný Turček and Horný Turček .
history
Turček was created in 1951 through the merger of the places Dolný Turček (German Unter-Turz , Hungarian Alsóturcsek ) and Horný Turček (German Ober-Turz , Hungarian Felsőturcsek ).
The place was created by the German colonization of the area in the 14th century and was founded by the city of Kremnitz. In 1371 Thurczia Inferior (Unter-Turz) with its two mining mills is mentioned, in 1442 both districts are mentioned. Originally the land belonged to various Junkers of Turz County . After internal disputes, the estate was sold to a citizen of Kremnitz in 1400. Long-standing quarrels began between the town of Kremnitz (which was in Persch County and was also a royal free town) and the Junkers of Mútna and Čepčín and later the Vladár family . Ultimately, the places were awarded to the city of Kremnica and excluded from the jurisdiction of Turz County. They only returned to Turz County in 1848.
The population worked for mines in Kremnitz and was active in the charcoal distillery and forestry. There was also a saw until 1945.
The places that were in the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 came to Czechoslovakia. During the Second World War, 182 victims of a massacre carried out by the German Gestapo were buried in a mass grave. After World War II, most of the German residents were evicted and replaced by Slovaks from Poland and Romania.
population
According to the 2001 census, of the 716 inhabitants at the time, 84.2% were Slovaks, there were also remnants of the German population with 13%. According to denomination, the Roman Catholic Church was in first place with 78.1%, followed by evangelists and atheists with 8.7% each.
