Mošovce (German Moschotz , Hungarian Mosóc - older also Mossóc ) is one of the largest communities in the Turz region in central Slovakia . The municipality is located about 20 km south of Martin and about 30 km northwest of Banská Bystrica .

history

Many well-preserved historical buildings bear witness to the 770-year history of the place. The place was mentioned for the first time in a deed of gift from King Andrew II of Hungary in 1233.

Mošovce originally consisted of two settlements: the first, Machyuch , was located in the area of today's Starý Rad ; the second, Terra Moys , which gave the village its current name, was in what is now Vidrmoch . Because of the name of the second settlement, which means "Land of Mojš", it is assumed that the whole village originally belonged to a Lord Mojš . This name could be an abbreviation of a compound Slavic name "Mojtech" (similar to Vojtech or Mojmír ). Over the centuries the name of the village has seen many variations, e.g. B. Mossovych , Mosocz , Mossowecz , villa regia Mayos alio nomine Mossovych , oppidioum Mayus sue Mosocz , Mosocz olim Mayus to today's Mošovce.

The name of a separate ancient part of Mošovce, the former settlement of Chornukov , has survived to this day in the modern form of Čerňakov . In addition to the actual place, the northeastern place Mazan belongs to Mošovce, but it is not an official district.

Mošovce first developed as a royal settlement with a free legal profession, and since the middle of the 14th century as a privileged town under the royal castle of Blatnica . In 1527 it fell into the hands of the Révay family, who suppressed Mošovce's privileges for almost 400 years.

In the past, Mošovce was an important handicraft center in the Turz area . The trades experienced an expansion and there were up to 15 active guilds in the city ; the shoemakers and the famous furriers with their embroidered bundas , lambskin coats and jackets , were the guilds that survived the longest. Today Mošovce is an important tourist area with many sights.

In the vicinity of Mošovce there is a complex of historical avenues and forests as a continuation of the Veľká Fatra Mountains with the mountains of Tlstá , Ostrá and Drienok . Bizarre shapes have emerged from limestone and dolomite . Then there are the obvious Blatnica- and Val Badia .

A stream called Mošovka runs through the village. It is divided into two arms: the main river arm and the so-called Oberbach , which in the past powered a water mill .

On the northern edge of the municipality, in the district of Čerňakov, there are several fish ponds that are fed by the Čierna Voda brook . Originally the ponds belonged to the noble Révay family. Today they are used for trout farming.

economy

Up until the beginning of the 90s there was a fur processing factory in the community and, in connection with it, there were other companies that manufactured fur clothing. Later, the population oriented itself towards tourist services (thermal springs), the food industry (bakeries), the construction industry (production of concrete prefabricated products and assembled houses, traditional buildings) and fishing (ponds). Agriculture remains important, with forestry growing in importance.

However, it is necessary to emphasize that the function of the municipality is still largely resident, and the majority of the economically active population works in the nearby towns of Turčianske Teplice and Martin .
