Blatnica (1927-1946 "Turčianska Blatnica"; Hungarian Blatnica ) is a municipality in central Slovakia about 18 kilometers southeast of the city of Martin .
location
The place lies at the foot of the Great Fatra at the junction of three valleys ( Gaderská dolina , Blatnická dolina and Konský dol ) and is crowned by the ruins of the Blatnica castle . There are numerous recreational facilities in the vicinity of the municipality.
history
The place is an old settlement and an important archaeological site. A cave settlement from the Eneolithic , a mass find from the Bronze Age and the Roman period was found here. The archaeological Blatnice-Mikulčice Horizont was named after the sword excavated here, a lance and other Slavic settlements from around 800 ( Neutra principality ) .
The place was first mentioned in 1120. It developed as a rural community under the protection of the castle, later it was the center of saffron cultivation and oil trade, which also brought some prosperity to the place, as the typical houses with their large gates testify.
After 1808 the medieval communities Sebeslavce and Svätý Ondrej (north of the main town) were incorporated.
