Valča (Hungarian Valcsa ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1763 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Martin , part of the Žilinský kraj and is part of the traditional Turz landscape .

The municipality is located in the western part of the Turčianska kotlina basin at the transition to the Little Fatra to the west . In Valča the rivers Valčiansky potok and Sloviansky potok converge and the resulting river flows into the Turiec in the neighboring town of Benice . In addition to the actual place, the 32.23 km² large municipal area also includes valleys of the two streams up to the main ridge of the Little Fatra. The town center is at an altitude of 477  m nm and is 15 kilometers from Martin .

A sulphurous mineral spring called Smradľavka (roughly: stinking water) rises in the Sloviansky potok valley .

Neighboring municipalities are Trnovo in the north, Benice in the east, Ležiachov and Slovany in the south, on a short stretch of Kláštor pod Znievom in the west, Rajec and Kunerad across the Little Fatra in the west and on a short stretch of Trebostovo in the northwest.

history

Valča Church

Valča was first mentioned in writing as Wolka in 1252 and is named after Volka, a son of comes Radon from Príbovce . The village belonged to the Zniev estate, a chamber at the end of the 18th century and a study fund in the 19th century. In 1828 there were 120 houses and 1,163 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture and forestry, but also as oil pressers and saffron processors.

The place in Turz County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Valča had 1532 inhabitants, of which 1414 were Slovaks, 12 Czechs, three Moravians and two Russians; three residents were of a different ethnicity. 98 residents gave no answer. 1164 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, 73 residents the Evangelical Church AB, nine residents the Evangelical Methodist Church, five residents the Greek Catholic Church, four residents the Evangelical Church, two residents the Reformed Church and one resident of the Mormons ; seven residents were of other denominations. 150 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 117 inhabitants has not been determined.
