The Oskar-von-Miller-Schule (short: OvM ) is a vocational school sponsored by the city of Kassel . The school is a legally independent vocational school (RSBS), an institution with legal capacity under public law (AÖR). It is named after the founder of the Deutsches Museum .

Building director Noll (2nd from left) presented a cannon from old times to the vocational school director Michel (left) at the inauguration in 1962. The ball was found during earthworks on the school's construction site.

history

The school was created in 1962 from the division of the Max Eyth School and initially operated as a vocational school for electrical engineering. The school location was initially Wimmelstraße in Kassel. After the inauguration of the first construction phase in 1964, the current school location on Weserstraße was moved to the former site of the Ahnaberg monastery .

It was given the name Oskar von Miller School in April 1969. The name was chosen because it did justice to all professional groups that were trained there at the time. The family of the namesake agreed to the application of the then headmaster Günter Ehrlich and gave the school a picture of the father with the saying "The well-being of mankind is the meaning of technology". This motto has accompanied them ever since and finds its meaning and expression in the documents on school development and the educational concepts. The school was the first vocational school that was allowed to bear the name Oskar von Miller .

The number of students has hardly changed since 1962. At that time there were 2068 students, with slight fluctuations it was always around 2100. The Oskar-von-Miller-Schule spans the spectrum from vocational preparation with elements of basic vocational training to dual vocational training and vocational training Further training in the technical school.

In February 2011, the decade-long renovation work on the school building from the 1960s was completed for the time being. The new pedagogical model with a completely new teaching and learning culture also had an impact on the architecture. Instead of the old classrooms, there is now a large so-called Max room on each floor of the main building, where 60 to 80 students can study at the same time on one level.

The Hessian Ministry of Culture certified the school in 2012 as an "Independent Vocational School (SBS)".

On May 19, 2014, the city council of Kassel passed the resolution to convert the school into a legally independent vocational school (RSBS) with effect from January 1, 2015. The Hessian school law enables this conversion according to § 127e of the Hessian School Act (HSchG). The school can thus independently dispose of free staff resources, hire staff for extended educational tasks or also conclude contracts for school assistants. The Oskar von Miller School is one of the first schools in Hesse and the first in Kassel to be run in this legal form.

New teaching and learning culture

From 2005 to 2011, the Oskar-von-Miller-Schule participated in the pilot project “Self-Responsibility Plus” of the Hessian Ministry of Education , which gave the school greater scope and led to certification as an “Independent Vocational School (SBS)” in 2012. This was accompanied by a complete upheaval in the conception and design of the lessons in order to promote the independent learning of the students and to support them individually. In a second step, digital media were added, which are now integrated into everyday learning as a matter of course. The new form of teaching is now attracting international interest and was presented by students and teachers at re: publica 2014.
