Specialist for safety and security has been a state-recognized training occupation in Germany since September 2002 according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). The training lasts three years and takes place in the dual vocational training system . The school education takes place in 20 state subject classes in Germany, usually in block lessons. There is also the option of attending a two-year retraining course with equivalent content. The training contains 880 teaching units in block teaching at the vocational schools, the retraining in the two years includes theoretical teaching of 2160 teaching units in the learning field concept.

The task of the specialists is primarily as a security service to ensure the protection of property under private law such as objects, assets and facilities, in particular through preventive measures and, if necessary, through security. When performing their duties, security and security specialists, like other security employees of security companies and every other citizen, are exclusively entitled to the so-called " everyone's rights ". Sovereign tasks can only be carried out after appropriate lending (e.g. in the context of passenger control or in the context of municipal security services). The job description was revised in 2008 in connection with the introduction of a two-year apprenticeship as “ service worker for protection and security ”.
