Košťany nad Turcom (until 1927 Slovak "Košťany"; Hungarian Kostyan ) is a municipality in the north of Slovakia with a population of 1,340 (December 31, 2019) that the Martin District , part of the kraj Žilinský heard and the traditional landscape Turz is counted .
geography
The municipality is located in the northern fall basin between the Turiec river to the west and the Beliansky potok to the east of the village. The municipality is deforested, flat to slightly hilly and covered by brown forest soils and auboils. The town center is at an altitude of 410 m nm and is five kilometers south of Martin .
Neighboring municipalities are Martin in the north, Žabokreky in the east, Necpaly in the southeast, Príbovce in the south, Trebostovo and Turčiansky Peter in the west and Bystrička in the northwest.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1323 as villa Coschan and belonged to several landlords: 1478 to a certain Justh von Necpaly, in the 18th century to the Ruttkay family and in the 19th century to Beniczky and Jesenský . In 1785 there were 55 houses and 402 inhabitants and in 1828 55 houses and 475 inhabitants, who were mainly employed in agriculture, as oil pressers and saffron processors, and after the abolition of serfdom in 1848 in several crafts.
The place in Turz County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 , after which it became part of Czechoslovakia and, when the country was partitioned in 1993, to Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Košťany nad Turcom had 1184 inhabitants, of which 1084 were Slovaks, eight Czechs, four Russians and two Germans; four residents were of a different ethnic group. 59 residents gave no answer. 473 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 297 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, six residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church, five residents to the Greek Catholic Church, four residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses, two residents to the Brethren Church and one resident each to the Jewish Congregation, the Orthodox Church and the Czechoslovak-Hussite Church; two residents were of other denominations. 269 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 100 inhabitants has not been determined.

Road No. 65 ( Žiar nad Hronom –Martin) runs through the village . There is a stop on the Salgótarján – Vrútky railway line (Zvolen – Vrútky section).
