Horný Kalník (Hungarian Felsőkálnok - until 1873 Felsőkelik ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 189 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to Okres Martin , part of the Žilinský kraj and is counted in the traditional Turiec landscape .

The municipality is located in the northern part of the torrent basin (Slovak Turčianska kotlina ) in the catchment area of ​​the Turiec . The town center is at an altitude of 445  m nm and is six kilometers from Martin .

Neighboring municipalities are Dolný Kalník in the north, Turčianske Jaseno in the east, Belá-Dulice in the south, Žabokreky in the southwest and Dražkovce in the west.

Horný Kalník was created by splitting up the original place Kalník and was first mentioned in writing in 1375 as duo Kalnok . From 1437 the village was owned by the Plathy family and by the Szenessy family in the 18th century . In 1785 the village had 21 houses and 138 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 15 houses and 151 inhabitants who were employed as farmers.

The place in Turz County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 , after which it became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Even in the first Czechoslovak Republic, Horný Kalník was an agricultural village.

The name is named after the murky (Slovakian kalný ) water in the local stream.

According to the 2011 census, there were 159 inhabitants in Horný Kalník, all of them Slovaks .

97 residents committed themselves to the Evangelical Church AB, 42 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, two residents to the Seventh-day Adventists and one resident to the Greek Catholic Church. 16 residents had no denomination and the denomination of one resident was not determined.
